Whiskey Row Walking Tour Review: What to Expect Before You Book

Let me get this out of the way first. I run the Whiskey Row Walking Tour. So you should read anything I say about it with appropriate skepticism. If you want third party reviews from real guests, the most up to date ones are on our Tripadvisor page and our Google Business Profile, both linked at the bottom of this post. I would encourage you to check those before booking.

What I can do in this post is tell you honestly what to expect on the tour, share what guests have actually said about it in their own words, and answer the questions I get asked most often before someone books. If something I describe here does not line up with how the tour actually runs when you take it, I want to know about it. My contact information is at the bottom.

What Guests Say About the Tour

Below are real reviews from guests who have taken the tour, lightly edited only for length and clarity. The first three are from our Tripadvisor page, where the tour currently holds a 5 star rating. The remaining four are from our Google Business Profile, where the tour also holds a 5.0 star rating across 10 reviews.

The Whiskey Row Walking Tour was an excellent way to immerse yourself in the Bourbon Trail and the history of both bourbon and Louisville. The sign up was easy and the price is very reasonable for multiple tastings and the guide. Drew was personable and extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to know more about bourbon and get a taste of Whiskey Row.

We really enjoyed our tour with Drew to kick off our bourbon trail weekend in Louisville. Drew is a wealth of knowledge about the city and an awesome storyteller. We enjoyed tastings at Bardstown Bourbon Company, Buzzard’s Roost, and Evan Williams. This is a must do if you are visiting Whiskey Row.

Our tour guide was excellent as he told us fun stories about the early history of Louisville, about distilling, and the craft of making Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey as we walked along the historic streets of Louisville to Whiskey Row. In the 2 hour tour, we stopped at 3 different distilleries along our route and there was plenty of bourbons and whiskeys to sample. There were 12 samples throughout the tour and each was a generous pour.

Our group of 6 had a wonderful time on the tour. Very informative. We learned a great deal about the history of downtown Louisville and the role bourbon played in it. We would absolutely recommend the tour and would take out of town visitors to walk it again.

Drew Shryock is the Bourbon Baron. He is a walking encyclopedia of bourbon history and lore. The other reason this tour is fabulous is that you get to visit 3 to 4 bourbon tasting rooms on Whiskey Row in one tour. This is a do not miss tour. Highly recommend.

Drew is a great and knowledgeable guide. This whiskey tour was also a walking history of downtown Louisville. Not to be missed.

We had an amazing time on our tour. Drew was extremely knowledgeable about the bourbon industry as well as downtown Main Street Louisville history. The great bourbon tastings, conversations, and overall experience are definitely worth it.

A few patterns are worth pointing out, because they tell you what most guests actually walk away talking about.

First, the history of Louisville comes up almost as often as the bourbon. This is not strictly a tasting tour. It is a city and bourbon history tour with three distillery stops included. If you book expecting to drink your way through three distilleries with light commentary, you will be surprised by how much history you get along the way.

Second, guests consistently describe the tastings as substantial. The most detailed Tripadvisor review counted 12 samples across the tour. Pours vary by distillery, but no one has ever come away feeling like they got a thin tasting experience.

Third, the word "knowledgeable" keeps coming up, often in the same sentence as the history of downtown Louisville. That is the combination most guests highlight: a guide who can speak to both the bourbon and the city, in a small group setting where there is room for actual conversation. Tours typically cap around 12 guests, so it is not the kind of experience where you are watching someone with a flag and a headset herd 40 people through a building.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Tour

Here is what happens, start to finish, on a standard tour day. This is the Morning Tour structure but the Afternoon and Sunday tours follow the same shape with different opening stops.

Arrival and Meet Up

Tours depart from the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center inside the Frazier History Museum at 829 West Main Street. You will arrive about 15 minutes early, check in at the front desk, and I will gather the group in the lobby. From there we will walk together to the first distillery stop.

The First Distillery

Depending on which tour you book, your first stop is either Bardstown Bourbon Company (Morning), Pursuit Spirits (Afternoon), or Big Bat Bourbon (Sunday). Each one is a 30 to 40 minute experience that includes a guided tasting and a deep look at what makes that producer unique.

The Walk Between Stops

Between distilleries, we walk a few blocks along West Main Street. This is the part of the tour most guests do not expect to enjoy as much as they do. I will point out the cast iron storefronts, explain why this row looks the way it does, and tell you the story of which distilling family built which warehouse. The walking is short, flat, and shaded for most of the route.

Buzzard’s Roost

Every tour, regardless of format, includes Buzzard’s Roost. This stop is a deep dive into secondary barrel finishing, which is the practice of re aging an already finished whiskey in a second barrel to bring out specific flavors. The tasting here is structured to show you how different barrel finishes transform the same base whiskey. Most guests find this stop genuinely educational, even those who arrived thinking they already knew bourbon.

Evan Williams Bourbon Experience

Every tour ends at Evan Williams. This is the longest stop and the one with the most historical content, including a walk through recreation of 1783 Louisville and a working artisanal distillery with copper hybrid pot stills. The tasting here features Heaven Hill expressions paired with bourbon balls.

Where the Tour Ends

Tours conclude at 1st & Main Street. One thing worth knowing: the tour is not a loop. If you parked at the Frazier, plan to walk back. The walk is about five blocks of flat sidewalk on Main Street. Many guests choose to stay on the row after the tour for dinner or another drink at one of the bars and restaurants nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions Before You Book

These are the questions I get asked most often by people considering a booking. If you have a question that is not covered here, call me at (855) 769.9255 or email whiskeyrowwalkingtour@gmail.com.

  • The tour lasts approximately two hours from the meet up at the Frazier History Museum to the end of the final tasting at Evan Williams, and then on to 1st and Main. Plan for the full two hours and possibly a few minutes more.

  • The price includes admission to all three distilleries, guided tastings at every stop, two hours of professional guiding led by me personally, and full historical narration of the buildings and bourbon industry along the route. Meals, drinks beyond the included tastings, and transportation are not included.

  • Yes. The tour is fundamentally a city and bourbon history tour with tastings included. Non drinkers can attend the walking and educational portions and skip the tasting pours. Many guests who book do not drink heavily on the tour and still rate it highly because of the history and storytelling content.

  • Comfortable walking shoes are essential. You will be on your feet for about two hours, walking on flat sidewalks and standing in tasting rooms. Dress for the weather. The walking portion of the tour is outdoors. Many guests wear casual layers in spring and fall.

  • The tour runs rain or shine. If the forecast is challenging, dress for it. Most of the tour time is spent indoors at the three distillery stops, so even on wet days the experience is largely covered. I recommend bringing a small umbrella if rain is in the forecast.

  • All tour sales are final once booked. I am not able to issue refunds after a reservation has been confirmed, including for weather or for guests who do not show up. If you need to reschedule, contact me directly as far in advance as possible and I will do my best to move your booking to a different date subject to availability.

  • Paid parking is available on Main Street at street meters and at nearby ground lots and parking garages. A paid parking lot is also available behind the Frazier History Museum at 9th and Washington Streets, with a parking booth attendant to assist you.

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time. We start the walk promptly, and once we leave the Frazier we are committed to a moving timeline through three distillery appointments. If you are running late, call ahead at (855) 769.9255.

  • Yes. The entire route is ADA accessible. All sidewalks and distillery buildings on the route are wheelchair accessible. Service animals are welcome. If you have specific mobility concerns or questions, contact me before booking and I will walk you through what to expect.

  • You must be 21 or over to participate in the distillery tastings and to enter the bar areas inside the distillery buildings. The walking portion and historical narration are family friendly. If your group includes guests under 21, let me know when you book.

  • Walk ups are welcome if the tour has not sold out. However, tours frequently sell out, particularly on Saturdays, during Derby week, and throughout October. I strongly recommend booking online in advance.

  • Yes. Private tours and bourbon tasting events can be arranged for conferences, conventions, group meetings, corporate outings, and other special occasions. Call me at (855) 769.9255 to discuss options.

Who Has Loved This Tour

Looking across hundreds of reviews and my own experience leading the tour, certain visitor profiles tend to walk away particularly happy. If you see yourself in any of these descriptions, the tour is probably a strong fit:

  • First time visitors to Louisville who want a fast, expert introduction to the city and its bourbon culture

  • Couples planning a Louisville weekend, particularly bachelor and bachelorette parties, anniversaries, and birthdays

  • Repeat Louisville visitors who have done individual brand tours and want a connecting narrative

  • History buffs interested in 19th century urban development, architecture, and Prohibition era America

  • Bourbon enthusiasts who want to taste at multiple distilleries in one afternoon without driving

  • Out of town friends and family visiting locals who want to share the best of downtown Louisville

Honest Things to Know Before You Book

A few things this tour is not, in case any of them are dealbreakers for you. I would rather you know now than be disappointed on tour day.

This is not a heavy drinking tour. Tastings are educational pours, not full pours. If your goal is to get drunk on bourbon, this is the wrong tour. There are plenty of bars on Whiskey Row where you can do that on your own after we are done.

This is not a bus tour of the rural Kentucky Bourbon Trail. We stay within downtown Louisville for the entire two hours. If you want to see Maker’s Mark, Buffalo Trace, or Woodford Reserve, you will need a separate tour or a driver. I personally recommend Bourbon Excursions.

This tour requires walking. The route is short and flat, but you will be on your feet for the entire two hours. If you have a mobility limitation that would make two hours of walking difficult, contact me before booking and we can discuss options.

This tour runs rain or shine, and refunds are not issued for weather. We do our best to keep guests comfortable, but you should book with the understanding that you are committing to the date regardless of forecast.

Finally, the tour is led by me personally, which is the point but also the limitation. I do not have a team of other guides covering different dates. If I am sick, traveling, or otherwise unable to lead a scheduled tour, that tour will be canceled with a full refund issued. This happens rarely but you should know it is possible.
